• Brush at least twice a day. When you brush, don't rush.

If possible, brush a full two minutes. Always brush your teeth before bedtime. Brushing eliminates plaque, a film of bacteria that clings to teeth. When bacteria in plaque come into contact with food, they produce acids. These acids lead to cavities. Use a soft/extrasoft bristled brush since this is gentler on the gums and less abrasive on tooth surfaces. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride to help prevent cavities. Consider using an electric toothbrush, particularly if you have arthritis or other problems that make it difficult to brush successfully.

  • Keep brushes free from germs.

Each time rinse your toothbrush with water after brushing. Store your toothbrush in an upright position, if possible, and allow it to air dry until using it again. Don't routinely cover toothbrushes or store them in locked containers, which can encourage the development of bacteria. Invest in a new toothbrush or a replacement head for your electric toothbrush every three to four months — or sooner if the bristles become frayed to ensure appropriate cleaning.

  • Brush your tongue as well as your teeth.

Brush your tongue as well as your teeth. This helps eliminate bacteria and freshens your breath.  After brushing your teeth and tongue, rinse your mouth with water.

There are so many good reasons to keep your family’s teeth and gums healthy. You can chew for good nutrition and avoid painful and expensive cavities, oral diseases, and infections of the mouth like gingivitis, bad breath or yellowing teeth. Researchers have also shown that plaque build-up on teeth can lead to artery and heart disease.

Fortunately, there are simple habits to keep teeth strong and healthy from childhood to old age.

Early detection and treatment of problems with your gums and teeth can help ensure a lifetime of good oral health.

White teeth do not automatically mean healthy teeth.

Having regular dental examinations and cleaning every six months is recommended to detect and prevent early dental diseases. X-rays may be taken to ensure areas not visually detectable are appropriately examined.

Flossing helps to keep your breath fresh.

Flossing after brushing each time helps eliminate plaque from between the teeth, and helps to keep your breath fresh. You can't reach the tight spaces between your teeth or under your gum line with a toothbrush. That's why regular flossing is crucial. In addition to daily brushing and flossing, rinsing your mouth with an antibacterial rinse can help prevent decay and gum problems.

A healthy diet is most important for healthy teeth and gums.

A well-balanced diet of whole foods -- including grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables, and dairy products -- will provide all the nutrients you need. Fibrous foods such as fruits and vegetables also help to cleanse teeth. Avoid a high frequency of sugary foods and  drinks such as lollies, chocolates, soft drinks, sweetened teas, or fruit juices.
